Ingredients

  • 5 lbs apples, peeled, cored & roughly chopped
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Add the chopped apples to a large slow cooker.
  2. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Stir to coat the apples.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8–10 hours, until the apples are very soft and darkened.
  4. Use an immersion blender to blend everything until completely smooth.
  5. If the apple butter is thinner than you'd like, leave it in the slow cooker uncovered on HIGH for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and spreadable.
  6. Stir in the vanilla, let cool and transfer to jars. Refrigerate.

Farm Box Tip: This is a great way to use several apple varieties together! Mixing sweet and tart apples gives the apple butter a deeper flavor—and one batch uses a full 5 pounds of apples.
